A kitchen does not need to be huge. What matters is whether it works well. Everyone understands this, yet a lot of kitchens still feel awkward to use. The main reason is that many people do not know how to plan a good layout or how to choose cabinets that fit their space. The kitchen is one of the most important areas in a home, and different floor plans lead to very different kitchen layouts and user experiences. With more than ten years of experience in home design, I want to share how to create a more thoughtful kitchen layout and how to pick the right cabinets.

The Basic Needs of a Kitchen Layout

Think of the kitchen layout as the structure. The counter, cabinets and appliances are the finishing touches. The structure matters more. So always put the layout first. A good starting point is to organize around the main work sequence: wash, prep and cook. From there, add areas for draining, plating, appliances, storage and the refrigerator.
Cooking follows a simple flow: take out the ingredients, wash and prep them, cook, then plate the food. If the layout matches this flow, the entire process becomes easier and more efficient.
Layout Needs in Different Situations
More Appliances
As living standards improve, small appliances have become must haves in the kitchen. They make daily cooking faster and more convenient. When planning the layout, try to place these appliances where you can reach them easily.
Social Needs
Traditional enclosed kitchens often make the person cooking face a wall, which limits interaction. Today, many people prefer open communication, so social kitchens have become more popular.
6 Common Kitchen Layout Types

1. Single Line Cabinets
This layout is common in small apartments. It takes up little space and keeps all functions in one line. Since everything is placed along one wall, the work areas can easily overlap. It is better to arrange the sink, prep area and stove in a logical order. If the room is narrow, consider using a smaller refrigerator and placing it inside the base cabinet to free up more counter space.
2. Two Lines Kitchen
This layout often appears in homes where the kitchen door faces a balcony. It allows two people to work at the same time. One person can cook while the other preps food on the opposite side. It makes teamwork much easier.
3. L Shaped Kitchen
This layout works well when the entrance is near the shorter side of the room. The workflow is smooth and convenient. The sink is best placed near the window. Leave enough space between the sink and the stove so you have room to prep food. If there is a pipe shaft at the corner, you can use a corner cabinet to make that area useful.
4. U Shaped Kitchen
This is a common choice when the entrance is on the longer side. With the same amount of space, a U shape usually offers the most storage and counter area. If your kitchen is square and not too small, a U shaped layout will be very efficient.
5. Peninsula Kitchen
A peninsula extends from a wall or cabinet. It adds extra workspace, dining space or storage. It also helps create a more open feeling without needing a full island.
6. Island Kitchen
An island stands on its own without touching any walls. There are two main types. One is a standalone island often used in large homes. The other combines the island with a dining table, which makes it possible to enjoy an island layout even in a medium sized apartment by merging the dining and cooking areas.
After planning the layout, storage becomes just as important. If your kitchen is large, you can even create a separate pantry. If the space is small, choosing the right cabinets will make a huge difference. Good cabinets can completely change how a small kitchen feels and give you more layout options.
